trying to liven things up around here. got me a week of vacation time from work and deer season is in full swing. done made meat with the business rifle and would love to get another one with it as well. gonna take the henry and improved henry out this week along with my paper cutter sharps. got me a trap door carbine 45-70 made by h&r , that a friend asked me to work a load for. he said i could hang on to it till deer season was over ;D, so maybe i'll get a chance to make meat with it as well. shot it today with my 45-70 loads for my sharps and it didn't like it. gonna load up some 45-70's with 55 grains of black powder and see if it will like that better. i'm sure my shoulder will as this jewel is lite and kicks like a mule. any one else got any hunting stories?

Whatever we portray here in the UK we do not have the hunting of game as you in the States, many of us envy your outdoor opportunities to go hunting.

well malpaso, if you ever make it down louisiana way, you have a open invite to come hunting with us. it has gotten tougher over the years to get a gun and to go hunting. i'm affraid the way they plan on disarming the common folk over here is to make it to expensive for us to buy guns and to hunt.it will be a rich mans sport only the elite. when i was a kid, my dad worked for the phone company, while he was out installing phone cables in the rural areas he would be eye balling places to hunt. we would go hunting the following weekend. back then the land was free and you could hunt most any where. it aint that way any more. timber companies buy up as much land and post it making it illegal to hunt. but they will lease the land out at a price of course. we leased a place for 200 bucks a year. that was 25 years ago. we still hunt the same place but it has tripled since then, and will go up next year as well. it keeps going up i will not be able to afford to hunt. many people who have hunted on lease property are feeling the same pain. i know guys who pay over a $1,000 a year to hunt on lease propety and it is still going up. that and the price of hunting license, ammuntions and other gear that is used to hunt with go up every year. i'm affraid my kid generation won't be able to hunt.

I like the feel here. I'm also a hunter and black powder season in the Southwest means that you practically have the whole place to yourselves when you go out.
Although I love my 2nd amendment rights, I also love my country and stand by the ideal that a just government fears its population. I am fiercely proud as an American citizen to be entrusted with the legal right to own guns, build/live my life, give emergency medical aid in the event of disaster relief, arrest anyone I catch in the act of committing a felony, and defend myself, my neighbors and those dear to me by all means necessary including the use of deadly force. Any left-wing "utopian" who thinks that they can change that has another thing coming. The more we "change", the worse it gets.
I see a lot of true salts on this site that I can relate with and I am just happy to be on the site.
BTW, good hunting Billy. Wish I could be there buddy.

Back in better economic times I used to spend a week in Wyoming every fall hunting Mule deer. I'd take out a scoped rifle and I take out a Sharps. Now the later I would limit myself to 100 yards because I just can not judge distance, and I don't practice beyond 200 yards at my range in Michigan. Anyway, to make a long story short I never saw a Mule deer within range when I had my Sharps, and I never shot a Mule deer outside of 100 yards when I was carrying a scoped rifle. - go figure! Just so you don't think I'm any threat to current Boone and Crockett scores, I think I have taken as many deer here in Michigan with my front bumper as I have a rifle. In Michigan we can't use a rifle cartridge where I live in the south, shotgun or pistol only. So I use my long rifle. The deer here taste like beef as they are all corn and bean fed. No gamey taste whatsoever. The state is now over-run with whitetail. Fewer and fewer hunters. My favorite shooting longrifle and backyard.

Beautiful long gun James, I'd love to have a nice red stock like that. Malpaso, careful what you wish for. I know that my collection is nothing compared to some of the guys on this site but once you get one, you cannot stop. -Dave Attachments:

You are starting to show signs of addictive behavior there Dave. I like your Bucks county longrifle, I also like a side opening patch box. This is my .60 caliber Judd Brennan Virginia style long rifle with tapered and flared Getz barrel. When I found out how much his rifles were going for now I quit hauling it around in the woods.

me and patriot and his boy zack went camping/hunting this weekend. we set up some what a period correct camp. slept on the cold ground wrapped up in our hudson bay blankets and buffalo robes. we did get cold but had a good time. we left in such a hurry friday i left the camera, so we didn't get no pictures of our adventure. i took a small buck with my henry rifle. the first kill with it. he came out in the last 15 minuets of light at 65 yards. that 255 grain soft lead bullet went clean through clipping a lung and removing about a 4 inch section of his back bone. dead in his tracks. i must admit i shot him for a doe and was a little disappointed in myself for killing a young deer, but i'm still tickled to have made such a great kill with my henry rifle loaded with lead and blackpowder. a guy we know had a camera and took some pictures , when i get a copy i'll post them

Glad the trip went well Billy. I'd take what you did any day over busting Jacks with an SKS on my buddie's ranch. Seems like that's all I have time to do until sometime next year.
