Fellows – Tsalagi Dave inspired me to post the image below with his recent post on a different thread. I don’t consider myself much of a knife guy but the bug bit awhile back and I finally procured some decent side knife reproductions. Thought I’d share with you here. The knives on the left are all premium mid-19th century reproductions from the 'Historic Bowies Collection' by Paul Chen/Hanwei Forge. Indeed, they are made in China but are extremely detailed and well-crafted reproductions made from original examples. These are all Hanwei Forge’s first run (though is missing a couple knives). Sadly, I understand not only will there not be a second run of different reproduction knives but the first run has been out of production for a couple years. The knives on the right are all pretty decent reproductions from Atlanta Cutlery – these are nowhere near the quality of the Hanwei Forge knives but aren’t too bad as far as reproductions go and are proper for the era. Reference material for these knives can be found in The Bowie Knife: Unsheathing an American Legend by N. Flayderman (2004). Brass
