well its summer in north eastern louisiana. the time of year i hate more than anything. its too hot to tan hides as they go bad in the heat before i can finish them. i can shoot but its so hot out i can only get a couple of shots in before the barrel heat up. guess i'll hold up in my shop with the a/c on high and reload some bullets, polish some brass and maybe make up some of my home made bullet lube. can't wait till winter, when the air is clear and cool and there are critters to hunt

I don't DARE go shooting. The desert grass is knee to hip-high in many areas (yes, the desert has dried grass covering it. Very little of it is sand). It's June 30, and we haven't had a decent soaking rain since April! Drier than Hell's cafeteria out there. We've had major grassland and range fires around me, some as close as 40 miles. And wind! But then, you've read about the West having a terribly dry season and fires. Black powder is the WORST propellant to fire in these conditions, because it creates so many sparks. Modern ammunition assembled with steel cores inside a copper jacket are also bad. The steel core hits rock and causes sparks. Utah's had about two dozen fires traced to shooters, and I' bet that many were using black powder (or its substitutes), or steel-cored bullets. I may not be able to shoot again until November or December, this drought keeps up! I used to shoot at a gravel pit, with nothing but sand and gravel beneath, but it's become active again: lots of equipment parked about, and piles of sand and gravel. That was my last inflammable area. Oh well, I can still take the Gatmobile out and watch mustangs (wild horses), hawks, eagles, etc. There's always something to watch in the desert, with good binoculars or naked eye. Damn, I wish we had rain! A full week of a soaker! The desert plants and animals need it.
