I have a Colt 2nd generation 1851 Navy I bought new in 1982 or 1983. Don't recall which year.
Still have the box and all paperwork, including the gold-plated Colt Black Powder Shooter pin!
Of all my cap and ball revolvers, it's my favorite because it looks authentic.
No doubt, some naysayer will enter this post and grumble about the 2nd generation Colts being "made in Italy" or some such thing.
Yes, some parts were roughly made in Italy but not the complete guns. Other parts were made here in America. Finishing, fitting and assembly were done in America.
Never could understand why people have to denigrate the 2nd generation and Signature series Colts as being "made in Italy" -- but conveniently fail to mention the many, many Winchesters and Brownings made in Japan by Miroku.
Incidentally, Miroku craftsmanship is very high.
Congratulations on a good price on two very nice Colt cap and ball revolvers! I'm sure you've already encountered a few know-it-all grumblers who called them "Spaghetti Colts" or some such nonsense.
The Colt 2nd generations are among the best-made cap and ball revolvers ever made. The quality is usually outstanding. Not so with the Signature series, whose quality can range from outstanding to dismal.
After about 3,000 rounds, my 2nd generation Navy is still going strong. It lost its bluing long ago, and now has a silvery patina that makes it a good photo subject here in the remote Utah desert.
It looks like an old original.
If I could figure out how to post a photo on this site, I'd enclose a few photos of it I've taken.
Any ideas?
