I was in Taos this summer and went to the Kit Carson Museum in his old house. There they have one of his rifles from his later years. I can''t remember the caliber, I want to say it was smaller maybe a 50 or 48 but I can't be sure.

That is an inscribed plate, Kit had donated the rifle to someone, or a group. I forget which. It was not inlaid, but looked very nice.

If I remember correctly, there is another of his rifles on display at Ft Garland, Colo. He was the commander of the post during part of the civil war. It is worth the trip whether the rifle is there or not.
