I have always like this picture, it really details some great stuff for helping put together a camp. Note: 1 Dogs in camp 2 The 25# ribbed black powder cans laying around 3 A wood bucket 4 What appears to be perhaps a "nail" keg 5 The full stock military sharps hanging on the wagon. 6 The small sharpening wheel 7 Hunter holding a long steel 8 Hunter's clothing - total absence of any frontier buckskin stuff 9 Shovel in camp 10 Small wagon for supplies - not hides which were usually freighted in larger wagons pulled by oxen

Malpaso: I first came across this image when it was used by Stan Dolega for advertising purposes with his company Wolf Ears leather. Hence the crease in the image as I simply photographed it. I have seen it since, but have never been able to document it's location or date.
Sheer speculation but the cartridges appear long, to me suggesting mid 1870's or later. Indeed, the hunter in question is wearing two belts with cartridges I wonder if that was practical or for the picture.
The other question I have is the dogs, good warning for approaching hostiles and warding off wolves? Then again they might just have made the trip with the photographer. I have never read of their common inclusion with a group of hunters.
I have always been fascinated by this image. To me it shows the essence of a group of hunters.

I'm sorry, but I don't see enough in this picture to convince me that these fellows are Buffalo Hunters.

I don't know Boot - I'd respectfully disagree. They have at least 75# of BP (unless that is blasting powder), two of the guys are wearing belts with a ton of long cartridges in them, two Sharps rifles, grinding wheel, one proud enough of his skinning knife and steel to be showing it, and a light wagon (all the stuff of a buffalo hunter) - these guy's are after a herd of something and then plan on skinning or butchering it. Just does not strike me as market hunters, you don't need that stuff for ducks, the occasional bear, or lion. They sure don't look like eastern sportsmen either. The only thing that confuses me is the dog. But if you are running bear or mountain lion you don't need two belts full of cartridges to haul around.
Without knowing the source of the picture you are right it is conjecture - but pretty good conjecture I'd say. This is such a common picture that someone must know of its source.
Modified: I originally got this image from Stan Dolega's advertising material, I located it and below the image he had written that it was buffalo hunters believed near Medicine Lodge, Kansas - the original being owned by Miles Gilbert.
What I wouldn't give to spend an afternoon with Miles Gilbert.
Modified again: Ha! You know I was googling this image to try and find more about it and the UK shooters board popped up with it on it where I saw myself comment that I wondered if these guy's were buffalo hunters. So much for my expert opinion - seems to vary with time. This is why I do this for free I guess, and why I would like to spend that afternoon with Miles Gilbert.
