Fellows – regarding a leather working project that might be of interest: Left photo is the hunter’s companion I made awhile back, is based on the photograph of an original shown on page 4 Encyclopedia of Buffalo Hunters and Skinners E-K by M. Gilbert, 2006 (shown here on right) Please post pictures of your hunter’s companions in this thread, these were indeed important items to hunters and skinners and I’m keen to see your creations & supporting info. A little late to the table here but I thought I'd show my "hunter's companion." This was inspired by one from a collection of accouterments originally owned by a hunter by the name of Charlie Parker. His was covered in buffalo hide - mine is not. Trying to follow what I thought a field expedient hunter might use, I cut my leather with a butcher knife and pounded the rivets with the flat side of an axe. Pretty crude - but it worked. The ripping and skinning knives are both I. Wilson. The steel is an unmarked flat sided one that could well date from colonial times. Mine: Charlie's: Note the similar flat sided steel owned by Charlie. Another original item attributed to the buffalo hunting culture.

All - Just for fun here is a section of a tintype I made last Summer at the James Hunt manor & farm. I was going through some tintype scans from over the Summer and came across one clearly showing my hunter's companion. This tintype sectional contains my hunter's companion lying on a stack of buffalo hides, it's pictured next to the good Mr Hunt's period grinding wheel. Seems to fit nicely in this thread on Hunter's Companions: Brass
